Buglasan Farm Family Congress declared open

Dumaguete City (16 October) -- Gov. Emilio C. Macias II formally declared this year's Buglasan Farm Family Congress open during the opening ceremonies on October 16, 2008 10:00 a.m. at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Provincial Agriculture Office.

The opening ceremony was done after the Thanksgiving Mass that with Rev. Fr. Ramonito Maata as the Mass Celebrant.Expected to give their messages during the program are SP Committee on Agriculture Chairperson Hon. Napoleon Villegas and Regional Executive Director Ricardo D. Oblena of the DA-Regional Field Unit 7.

Various contests await the Farm Family Congress participants who come from rural-based organizations of the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO), including farmers, fishermen, rural improvement clubs (RICs) and 4-H groups, according to Nitz Bangay, information officer of the Provincial Agriculture Office.

Participants are expected to apply the knowledge and skills they gain from the agricultural technologists and technicians who will speak at the congress during the skills and method demo contests.

There will also be a display of organically-grown farm products at each booth of the participating local government units for the "Booth/PINAKA" contest.

The products will be sold to the public after the contest judging at 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 16.

Bangay added that the proclamation and coronation of the winners of the 2008 Farmer King, RIC Queen, Mr. and Miss 4H and Macho Gay is an awaited occasion every year of the farm family congress, for which the rural-based organizations prepare for.

The culmination and awarding program will be done on Oct. 17 at 3:00 p.m. and this will be attended by Vice Governor Jose Petit Baldado, Board Members Ernesto Tijing and Mariant Escano-Villegas together with Cong. Jocelyn S. Limkaichong, Cong. George P. Arnaiz and Cong. Henry Pryde Teves who are expected to give inspirational messages.

Earlier, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), thru Undersecretary Austere A. Panadero called on local chief executives all over the country to initiate simple and fitting activities to celebrate the Rural Women's Day last October 15.

The celebration of the National Rural Women's Day recognized the many contributions of rural women in ensuring food and water security in their homes, community and country especially in the war-torn areas in Mindanao.

The celebration was pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1105 issued in 1997 declaring every 15th day of October as the National Rural Women's Day, in consonance with the celebration of the World Rural Women's Day. (PIA/rmn)
