DPWH 6 fast-tracks rehabilitation of damaged infra in Western Visayas

Iloilo City (16 July) -- Director Rolando Asis of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH 6) reported that they are conducting extensive repair/rehabilitation of roads and bridges which were heavily damaged by typhoon Frank.

The DPWH here disclosed that damages to infrastructure in Western Visayas were estimated to value at P1.8 billion.

Information Officer Vivian Tan of DPWH 6 said that thirty-five (35) bridges were affected, and some 26 road sections were rendered un-passable after the onslaught of the typhoon.

Tan said that of the 35 affected bridges, 28 are now passable while the seven (7) bridges were provided with alternate routes and/or foot-bridges for pedestrians. All road sections are now pasasable with repairs still going on. Assistance is also being extended ion the clearing operations of cities and towns that are covered with mud.

It will be recalled that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during the NDCC cluster meeting of the Cabinet at the Iloilo Airport, urged the Department of Budget and Management to immediately release rehabilitation funds for infrastructure destroyed by typhoon Frank.

Meanwhile, President Arroyo's State of the Nation Address (SONA) this year will center on government's subsidies for the poor, electricity, food production and infrastructure.(PIA)
