Iloilo, Capiz studes top essay writing, poster-slogan contest

ILOILO CITY, July 30 (PIA) -- Students from Iloilo and Capiz have topped the National Disaster Consciousness Month essay writing and poster-slogan contest in Western Visayas.

Capiz National High School student Ma. Hazel Joy M. Faco from Roxas City made her school proud by topping the on-the-spot essay writing contest organized by the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) here last week.

Student Antonio V. Sibug of Iloilo City National High School emerged with the top entry in the poster-slogan making contest in the secondary category while Elcid Villegas brought honor to his school Baluarte Elementary School in Molo district here with his top-winning creation in the elementary category of the same contest during the event held at Robinsons Place Iloilo.

Alyssa Jude M. Montalban of Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School in Cabatuan, Iloilo got the second place and Kathleen Tajaros of Julio Ledesma National High School in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental settled for third in essay writing, which was open to high school students only.

In the poster-slogan making competition, Orly S. Bayona of Sagay National High School in Sagay City, Negros Occidental was second while Paulene Mae A. Albelar of Alimodian National Comprehensive High School in Alimodian, Iloilo was third.

Christallene Joy T. Acojeda of Tandang Sora Elementary School in San Carlos City was second while Diana Faith G. Mistio of Governor Santos Capadocia Memorial School of Antique was third in the elementary category.

The winners received cash prizes and certificates of recognition from the organizers of the competition which became one of the highlights of the month-long observance in July for the first time. Ten consolation prize winners were declared in each competition category.

RDRRMC chairperson and OCD Regional Director Rosario T. Cabrera said they organized the competition to provide the youth a venue wherein they can express and share their ideas and talents on how to help people and communities prepare and reduce the risks from natural calamities and other disasters as well how to make communities safe and resilient.

Cabrera also thanked the participants and the schools divisions and schools they represented as well as RDRRMC member-agencies, the media and other institutions and individuals for supporting the activity.

The competition focused on the theme of this year’s observance, “Ligtas na Bayan, Maunlad na Pamayanan.”
