Iloilo airport of international standard to boost WV economic growth

Iloilo City (24 Mar) -- Three years from now, this province will have its own airport of international standard with its concomitant benefits in form of more employment opportunities and eventually economic growth for Western Visayas.

During the press conference held in her recent visit here, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo announced that the contract for the P6.2 billion new Iloilo airport of international standard had already been signed and the construction will start as soon as the notice to proceed will be given to the winning Japanese contractor.

“The P6.2 billion airport project will give jobs for the people of Iloilo not to mention the job that will come later in three years time when it’s finished, when investment will be coming in, even more conveniently because of the international airport”, President Arroyo said.

President Arroyo said that part of her administration’s program to create jobs in Iloilo, in Region VI is to provide the important infrastructure needed to make investors increase their investment.

She also added that it is time for Iloilo to have the international airport since it is the country’s fourth busiests airport today with Metro Manila being the busiest.

To further boost development in the region, the President said a regional airport will also be set up in Silay, Negros Occidental costing P4.8 billion.

“The international airport in Iloilo will be having planes from America and Europe and the regional airport in Bacolod will have planes coming from Japan, Korea and Guam”, President Arroyo said.

Together these two airports, she said, will make a very,very modern infrastructure setting for a good investment climate three years from now and even when the construction itself begins.

Also, according to the President these airports are the realization of the dreams, after many, many years of the people living in these areas.

She disclosed that when the new airport in Iloilo opens, the old airport will become a commercial and light industry complex which will also give more jobs to the Ilonggo people. (PIA)
