Iloilo holds oratorical contest on water

Iloilo City (11 October) -- "Water for you and me: How far can we go?".This will be the theme of the oratorical contest to be conducted by the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) as part of their 27th anniversary celebration. The contest will be held on October 27, 2005 at 1 o' clock to 5 o' clock in the afternoon at the CAP Development Center, Gen. Luna St. of this city.

The contest is open to all bona fide high school students coming from the areas covered by the services of MIWD that include the municipalities of Oton, San Miguel, Pavia, Cabatuan, Santa Barbara and Maasin and the city of Iloilo.

Prior to the October 27 finals of the contest an elimination will be conducted among Iloilo City secondary schools which were divided into three clusters - the public secondary schools, private secondary school and state universities and colleges and laboratory secondary schools. The top two contestants in each cluster will represent Iloilo City in the finals to compete with the contestants coming from the municipalities.

Contestants will be judged on the following criteria: content - 40%; delivery - 30% and voice - 30%.

The top three winners will receive cash awards of P5,000, P3,000 and P2,000 respectively plus trophies each. Non-winners will also receive a consolation prize of P500. Certificates of Appreciation will be given to all contestants and their respective schools.

Meanwhile, a day before the oratorical contest, the MIWD will also sponsor an on-the-spot poster- making contest. This will be participated in by representatives of participating municipalities and secondary schools in Iloilo City.

Entries will be judged on the following criteria that include concept - 40%; artistry - 30% and originality - 30%. Every contestant will be given the chance to orally interpret and/or defend his/her entry before the Board of Judges. The entry's relevance to the theme announced during the contest plus the contestant's interpretation shall constitute the criteria for concept (40%). Top three winners and non-winners of this contest will receive the same prizes as that of the oratorical contest.

The winners in the said contests will represent the MIWD serviced areas in the regional level contest.

The Philippine Association of Water District (PAWD) sponsors the national contest for the oratorical and on-the-spot making contests scheduled on January 18, 2006. The event is one of the highlights of the annual convention of the PAWD to be held here in Iloilo City on January 18 - 20, 2006. (PIA)
