LGUs encouraged to strongly support 3rd Philippine Olympic Festival
Tacloban City (April 9) -- Considering the significance of the 3rd Philippine Olympic Festival in the over all youth development efforts, the Local Chief Executives in the various local government units of the country are encouraged to provide support and assistance to ensure its successful conduct.
The Department of Interior and Local Government, in a Memorandum Circular No. 2008-25 signed by Undersecretary for Local Government Austere A. Panadero, the participating LGUs are encouraged to undertake the organization of a local team in coordination with the concerned National Sports Association; to provide traveling allowances to the team; to shoulder expenses for uniforms of team athletes and officials; and to shoulder food expenses of team athletes and officials.
The Host LGUs shall provide competition venues free of charge, logistical support through accommodation for participating teams and Sports Technical Officials, transportation between venues and billeting, medical services, Secretariat Office and others.
The Philippine Olympic Festival consisting of a series of five qualifying games will be held in various regions of the country. On April 2-6, the Central and Northern Luzon Qualifying Games was held at SMBA in Olongapo City.
On May 21-25, the Mindanao Qualifying Games will be held at Lanao del Norte while the NCR Qualifying Games will be held in Manila on June 25-29. The Visayas Qualifying Games will be held in Negros Occidental on July 23-27; while the Bicol and Southern Tagalog Qualifying Games will be held on September 10-14 at Trace College in Laguna.
Now on its third year, the Philippine Olympics Festival will culminate in a National Championship will be held in Misamis Oriental on October 20-26, 2008. It aims, among others to identify talents and to develop youth athletes with potential for qualification to the Sea Games, Asian Games and 2012 London Summer Olympic Games, the 2010 Youth Olympic, 2010 World Martial Art Games and other International Federation-organized World Championships.
The Festival is an initiative of the Philippine Olympic Committee in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission, Local Government Units, and the National Sports Associations.
It is endorsed by the Department of Education and the Department of Interior and Local Government. (PIA 8)
