'Quinta' affects more than 2,500 families in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY, December 27 (PIA 6) - - A total of 2,531 families and 2111 persons in various municipalities of the province of Iloilo were badly affected by the flood caused by the intense rains brought by typhoon Quinta.

The Iloilo Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) said a consolidated damage report is still being prepared by the local governments.

“Only 22 municipalities have submitted the typhoon damage report, and we expect more reports to come from the rest of the province’s affected towns,” Provincial Administrator Raul Banias told PIA.

The affected families and persons were evacuated to safer grounds by their respective Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Banias said the province’s engineering department was instructed to assist the municipality of Calinog for the immediate repair of Cabaguiao Bridge, and “we still expect to receive reports concerning damages on agriculture sector and other infrastructure facilities.

“We are now procuring boxes of mineral water, rice, canned sardines, biscuits and many others for our immediate relief assistance to the affected people,” Banias said.

The Municipality of Janiuay which reported 2,027 persons and 405 families was declared under state of calamity. The municipality also reported 22 totally damaged houses; 282 partially damaged houses; and one fatality.

Two other lives were claimed by Quinta from the Municipalities of Lambunao and Barotac Nuevo.

“Even now that the rain has already abated there are still rising flood waters in low lying towns of Dumangas, Zarraga and parts of Leganes and Pototan, Banias said as he noted that upon instruction of Governor Arthur Defenspor and our OIC Governor Richard Garin, we have deployed our dump trucks and rescue team to augment rescue and evacuation activities”.

The Iloilo PDRRMC report said affected municipalities include Alimodian, San Miguel, Zarraga, Janiuay, Lambunao, Mina, Calinog, Cabatuan,Pototan, Bingawan, Duenas, Ajuy, Barrotac Nuevo, Anilao, Passi City, Dingle, Dumangas, San Enrique, Balasan, San Rafael, Concepcion, Barrotac Viejo,

“We maintain our monitoring and deployment of vehicles for rescue and relief operations,” Banias concluded as he noted that the Iloilo PDRRMC will meet for the consolidation of the typhoon damage report, and to address necessary measures needed for the recovery of the affected local government units.(JCM/VWV/PIA 6)
