Iloilo City (7 May) -- Good roads and airports are vital for tourists to reach their destinations, thus the government has gone into a surge in infrastructure.

This was disclosed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as she emphasized that promotion is equally important for tourists to be informed of the natural beauty spots of the country.

In Western Visayas, major programs and projects such as the new Iloilo Airport and the Bacolod-Silay Airport have now been established.

DOT 6 Director Edwin Trompeta when asked in a PIA interview about the impact of President Arroyo's Super Regions Project, said that the "bulk of investments on tourism are in our area, and there are growing signs that the Strong Republic Central Tourism Super Region is really working magic, and it is a becoming reality in so far as this region is concerned".

It may be recalled that during the SONA of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Central Philippines super region was declared as the tourism hub of the country. Central Philippines super region comprises Regions V (Bicol Region), VI (Western Visayas), VII (Central Visayas) and VIII, plus the provinces of Palawan and Romblon.

Meanwhile, DPWH Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. said in a press report that the Super Regions priority infrastructure development projects which were outlined by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during her State-of the-Nation Address will be completed before year 2010.

It will be recalled that President Arroyo in her SONA ordered the fast tracking of the rehabilitation and construction of infrastructure projects under the Super Regions strategy, a development concept aimed at harnessing the natural competitive advantages of major areas of the country as well as that of knowledge and technology.

Through the Super Regions concept, development is being brought back to the people at a faster rate in terms of physical infrastructure, development of human capital and peaceful communities. (PIA)
