Western Visayas best performing LGUs named

Iloilo City (16 December) -- Negros Occidental province, San Carlos City and the municipalities of Oton and Anilao of Iloilo province have been named as best performing local government units in Western Visayas during the 2009 Excellence in Local Governance (Excell) Award.

Aside from the major award, Negros Occidental also bagged four other special awards in the provincial category. These awards are Excellence in Local Legislation, Excellence in Administrative Governance, Excellence in Economic Development and Excellence in Environmental Management.

On the other hand, San Carlos City also won three special awards in the city category. These awards include excellence on administrative governance, social services and environmental management.

Oton also went home special awards on local legislation and economic development in the 1st-3rd municipality category while Anilao town won three special awards in the 4th to 6th class municipality category which include excellence on local legislation, administrative governance and social services.

The Excellence in Social Services award for the provincial category was won by the province of Guimaras.

Kabankalan City and Bacolod City of Negros Occidental received the excellence awards in local legislation and economic development, respectively, in the city category.

For the 1st to 3rd class municipality category, the excellence in social services and environmental management awards were garnered by Miag-ao, Iloilo and the excellence in administrative governance award went to Kalibo Aklan.

The excellence in economic development and environmental management awards (4th to 6th class municipalities) went to the towns of Guimbal, Iloilo and Pulupandan, Negros Occidental, respectively.

Local chief executives of the best performing local government units received their cash awards amounting to P20,000 each and plaques during the awarding of winners held in Iloilo City on December 15, 2009.

Each of the special award winners received P10,000 cash each and a plaque.

The Excell Awards is spearheaded by the regional office of the Department of Interior and Local Government in Western Visayas. It is a regional effort which recognizes excellent performances of local government units on five areas namely: administrative governance, social services, economic development, environmental management and local legislation.

This year’s awarding ceremony was attended by DILG UnderSecretary Austere Panadero, Presidential Assistant for Western Visayas Raul Banias, Dr. Johannes Paul of GTZ, DILG 6 Officials led by Director Evelyn Trompeta and local government executives of nominated LGUs in the region. (PIA)
