1. HALOY: CASPE, CELDA, CUARTE-FUERTES, MONEVA, MOSCARDON, TORMON, VALENZUELA
   
   HALOY was the father of the seven children who first used in Cabatuan the surnames of Caspe, Celda, Cuarte-Fuertes, Moneva, Moscardon, Tormon, and Valenzuela.
   
   He was born just before the Spaniards settled in Panay.
   
   HALOY was the son of Datu Humanging and the grandson of Datu Kilaton who came to the Philippines with the third wave of Malay settlers sometime around the 15th century. Datu Kilaton later founded on the bank of the river Tigum a settlement which would later become the pueblo called Cabatuan.
   
   After the Spaniards settled in Panay, Datu Haloy was given the name Alonzo. He later married Amas. Being of great wealth, they were popularly referred to as ‘Si Alonzo pilakan, si Amas bulawanan.’ The couple was blessed with seven children, all boys, named Bido, Kayaw, Pongkol, Batol, Oming, Hadog, and Ontolan.
   
   When the Spanish government ordered conscription to forced labor, all Filipino families were given surnames to identify the family lineage, and consequently to identify the fifth son who, by order of the authorities, was automatically conscripted to work in favor of the Spaniards. This conscription was called ‘quintos’.
   
   To evade the quintos, Alonzo and Amas gave their seven children different surnames to hide their lineage. Thus, the children became Bido CASPE, Batol CELDA, Ontolan CUARTE-FUERTES, Oming MONEVA, Pongkol MOSCARDON, Kayaw TORMON, and Hadog VALENZUELA.
   
   The original surname for Ontolan was not established because his descendants evolved into the CUARTE and the FUERTES families.

2. LUJAN, LUHAN
   
   Lujan/Luhan in the Visayas
   
   The Lujan name and its Philippine variant Luhan are concentrated in Cabatuan town in Iloilo, Buenavista in Guimaras, and Valladolid town and Bago City in Negros Occidental. The earliest recorded family member from the Visayas was Modesta Luhan who was born in 1884 in Jordan, Guimaras and was married in 1903 to Ariston Buendia, also of Jordan [3]. There was no record as to what year did she die.
   
   Doroteo Lujan, former vice mayor of Cabatuan and patriarch of the Lujan family in the said town, adopted his mother’s surname having been an illegitimate child. His mother (first name unknown) was from Guimaras while his father, Bernabe Paniza, was from Passi [4].
   
   Bernabe Paniza had seven children by Ramona Zaragoza of Cabatuan. They were (by order of birth) Antonio (born 1876), Isidro, Ramon (born 1878), Barselisa, Remedios, Primitiva (born 1896) and Presentacion [5].
   
   Doroteo Lujan was married to the former Margarita Taras of Barrio Tinio-an, where the Doroteo Lujan Elementary School now stands on a piece of land he donated to the Municipality of Cabatuan.

3. ROTE, RUTE ... PANIAGUA, PANI-AGUA

4. JILOCA
   
   I've been doing a research on the history of the Jiloca Family. Based on available information in the internet, the name "Jiloca" originated in a province in Spain. It is somewhat related to a valley, river, etc. in Zarragoza, Spain. In 2001, I came across a person in the internet with the name "Jiloca" in Madrid, Spain. I sent him an e-mail but never got a reply. It could be because my mail was in English and he could hardly understand it. Now I'm trying to search for the same person in the internet but could not find it anymore. Based on "word of mouth" information when I was based in Iloilo City, Philippines, the Jiloca family started in the Philippines this way: A guardia civil named "Jiloca" was once assigned in a pueblo in Cabatuan, Iloilo during the late 1700's of the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. The said guardia civil was then designated as Pueblo Mayor and married a local. Though this information could not be verified with documents (as of now) but at least this is a good start in tracing the roots of the Jiloca family. I hope there are still Jilocas in Spain who could help me out on this. Gracias!

   Webmaster's Notes: "Pueblo Mayor" could be referring to Tenyente Mayor, a town position in those days probably equivalent to today's vice mayor. Spaniards occupying municipal positions especially in the second half of 1700's in Cabatuan suggest the existence of the Encomienda system.
