THE PIETA is the image of the Virgin Mary carrying on her lap the dead body of Jesus Christ after the body was taken down from the cross. The Pieta is one of the many images depicting the passion of Jesus Christ paraded in the religious procession during the Holy Week. The life-size statue of the Pieta in Cabatuan was one of the original images ordered by the Spanish priest after the town of Cabatuan was fully organized in 1733. Among the several original images, only six remain in Cabatuan today. The images, after they were received by the priest during the Spanish times, were assigned to prominent families in Cabatuan for safekeeping and payment of 300 pesos in gold coin. The Pieta was assigned to the seven Haloy brothers. Bido Caspe, being the only brother with a house in the poblacion, was tasked by the brothers to keep and maintain the image. For six generations, the image has remained with the Caspe family until today. |
