L 4 MARCH 1993 THE GLOW 3 49th Commencement Program Sanchez to address 583 graduates Dr. Serena Lonjas Sanchez Ph.D., a professor of animal science and veterinary medicine in Visayas State College of Agriculture in Baybay, Leyte will address the 583 graduates of the school during its 49th Commencement Exercises on March 27. The 44-year old commencement speaker is an alumna of the school, having graduated as valedictorian in 1965. She finished her elementary education at Martin Cubil (Gins MARY CHRISTINE P. GIL Mary Christine Gil and Plebiscite Alfaro will lead Class '93 during the 49th Com­mencement Exercises of the school on March 27, starting at 7:30 A.M. Gil is the class valedictorian while Alfaro is the class saluta­torian. Gil is the eldest of the three children of Engr. Mario Gil, a Mechanical Engineer em­ployed in the regional office of the National Irrigation Administration, and the former Ma. Pet Portillano, a Math teacher of the school. Alfaro is the youngest of the seven children of Mr. Juanita Alfaro, a retired policeman, and the former Matemidad Torre. A total of 583 graduates coming from the 13 sections of the fourth year class wi.ll re­ceive their diplomas from Mr. EduardoPefiar­anda, General Education Supervisor II, repre­senting Dr. Pedro B. Trinidad, regional direc­tor of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports. Other honor graduates of class '93 include Jane Romallosa, first honorable mention; Ariel Patag) Elementary School in 1961. She pursued her Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Chemistry in the University of the Philippines at Los Banos, Laguna and finished it in 1971. Pursuing further her post-graduate studies, she completed her Master of Science degree at UP at Los Banos in 1975. Her field of concentration in pursuing her MS degree in Animal Science, PLEBISCITO T. ALFARO Moralba, second honorable mention; Emil Pedrola, third honorable mention; Ivy Cla­mucha, fourth honorable mention; Rosela Cornago fifth honorable mention. Joemel Pedrola, sixth honorable mention; Aileen Angelo, seventh honorable mention; Menchie Gonzales, eighth honorable men­tion; Gertjie Alcayaga, ninth honorable men­tion; and Melita Mayormente, tenth honorable mention. The school's 49th Commencement Exer­cises will be opened by a processional March of the graduates, together with their parents. A number of awards will be given to outstand­ing graduates during the program. Also during the program, the graduates will be inducted to CNCHS Alumni Associa­tion by Mr. Nonito G. Baldeviso, first vice president of the association. The theme of the commencement program this year is Empowerment Through Educa­tion. OR SERENA LONJAS SANCHEZ Ph.D. Finally she obtained her Doctor of Philosophy degree, with concentration on Animal Science, at Iowa State University, U.S.A. and at UP Los Banos in 1981. She pursued her post-doctoral studies on Animal Science in Wageningen Agricultural University and finished it in 1990. Her post-graduate studies were completed through scholarship grants. To her credit, she passed the chemist board examination and the sugar researcher examination. Her work experiences include her having been a researcher assistant in the National Research Council of the Philippines from 1971-1973. She has beenaprofessorin Visayas State College of Agriculture from 1975 to the present. Due to her professional competence and vast educational background, she has authored and co-authored anumber of scientific articles published in several magazinesand periodicals. Upgrading her professional competence and sharing her professional expertise, she has attended a number of scientific seminars and training eitheras aparticipant, as a re source speaker, or as an adviser. The former Serena Lonjas is married to Edmundo M. Sanchez, a bank appraiser employed in Cebu City. The couple has four children-Darlene, Edmundo Jr., Rizza Kathrina, and Arden Mae.
