MARCH 1993 THE GLOW 11 1 Math Department Sponsors UP Harana choir concert, by Mary Christine Gil Apelo receives teachers awards Mr. Lope B. Apelo Jr., commandant ofthe CAT-1 unit of the school, received a cash award and a plaque of recognition for having been chosen as the school teacher with the most outstanding performance during the school year 1992-1993. The cash award ofP 1,000. 00 and the plaque of recognition, given by Engr. and Mrs. martin L. de la Rosa Jr., were awarded to him during the commencement program on March 27 Lilia G. Fancubela, the school administrator, gave the awards in behalfofthe donors. For seven years, Engr. Martin L. de la Rosa Jr., an alumnus of the school now working in Texas, U.S.A., and his wife Mely, have given these awards to a teacher or employed of the school with the most outstanding performance during the school year. The de la Rosa have institutionalized the awards to provide incentives for the school personnel to strive for outstanding performance, and to give due honor and recognition for such a performance. Apelo received the awards for having consistently demonstrated excellence in teaching, specifically in CAT-1 instruction. This is proven by the fact that the CAT-1 unit of the school of which he is the commandant has been adjudged the best CAT-1 unit in Central - Western Iloilo for seven consecutive years. He is the seventh recipient of the awards, the other recipients of the awards are Mr. Victor S. Marquez, Mr. Jose Bibanco Jr., Miss Estefania Sampiano, and Mr. Rodrigo Tacay. 9 PASS UPCAT Nine fourth year students of the school passed the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) given on September 5, 1992. The UPCAT passers are Mary Christine Gil, Plebiscite Alfaro, Jane Romallosa, Ariel Moralba, Emil Pedrola, Joemel Pedrola, Ivy Clamucha, Aileen Angelo, and Shamen Montafiez. With their passing the UPCAT, they are qualified to study in the University of the Philippines in the Visayas, based in Miag-ao, Iloilo. The Math department of the school sponsored a benefit cultural show on February 10, starting at 4:00 p.m. at the school stage. The show featured the University of the Philippines in Iloilo High School Harana Choir in concert. The concert was preceded by a modem dance contest, participated in by dance groups of four curriculum years. Afterthe contest,the concert proper started. It was opened by the singing of the national anthem by the choir. Mrs. Delia S. Bayoneta, head of the Mathematics department of the school, delivered the opening remarks. In her speech, she said, "We are sponsoring this benefit concert in order to raise funds for our department. Due to budgetary constraints, our school does not have appropriations in the school budget to finance the participation of our students in DECS and DOST - sponsored math contests." During the first part of the concert, the choir sang popular ethnic songs of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Later the choir interpreted popular English songs. The finale number of the concert was a medley of love songs, arranged by Prof. Rosario Sumagpi. The UP in Iloilo High School Harana Choir is composed of 31 members. Prof. Rosario Sumagpi is the pianist and arranger of the choir. Its director and choreographer is Prof. Erlinda Causing. Prof. Roman Sanares takes charge of the lights and stage design. The executive producers of the concert are Dr. Elnora Cabalfin, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; and Prof. Clara Linab, principal of the UP High School in Iloilo.. In 1984, a choral group of talented students from UPV High School was formed and named the UP HARANA. In December of that year, they presented their first concert. For several years, Harana has presented successful shows and concerts performed at several programs especially on campus and in the community which elicited favorable and appreciative response from various groups. The success was made possible through the hard work, perseverance and commitment of the members. The UP Harana Choir, conducted by Prof Rosario Dumagpi, sings an ethnic song of Luzon.
