The GLOW MARCH 1995 Town honors local hero Iloilo vice governor appropriates P100.T for one-room building The Municipality of Cabatuan honored the late senator Tomas V. Confesor, a local hero, oil his 104th birth anniversary on March 2. At 6:30 a.m., a Requiem Mass was held at the parish church followed by a floral offering at the monument of the late "Stormy Petrel of Philippine Congress" in the town plaza, arid at his birth marker in barangay Maraguit. The floral offering was partici­pated in by Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and several public and private agencies in town. A civic-military parade was held around the major Streets in the poblacion at 1:30 p.m. It was participated in by representa­tives of all national, provincial, and munici­pal agencies in town, as well as private or­ganizations in town. A program followed after the parade at the community stage. The principal speaker during the program was Cong. Licurgo Tirador of the third district of Iloilo. In his speech, Cong. Tirador delved on the ster­ling qualities and virtues of the late gover­nor of Panay and Romblon. He also re­counted the heroic deeds and exploits of Tomas Confesor. It should be recalled that the late Senator Tomas V Confesor, as a lawmaker, authored Republic Act III which created the charter of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, thus making it independent from the Boy Scouts of the United States of America. He also authored the Cooperative -Marketing Law of the Philippines. Tomas V Confesor a distinguished Fili­pino patriot, gallant hero, prominent states­man, economist. and one of the great parlia­mentarians, was born in Cabatuan oil March 2, 1891. His father "Maestro" Julian Confesor, then vice president of the town, was executed by the American military gov­ernment on June 5, 1901 because of Ids revo­lutionary activities. His mother, Prospera Valcn7ucla, died a few year later, thus mak­ing him an orphan to c!iie a career of his own. This explains in a way why Tomas Confesor grew to be such an indomitable fighter. His first battle was wadi poverty as he struggled through high school and college. In the "land of opportunities' lie scrubbed floors. washed dishes, and dusted window panes. He finished the degree of Bachelor of Sci­ence in Commerce. Major in Economics, from the University of California in 1914, and graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy at the University of Chicago. Returning to the Philippines in 1916, he served the government as a public school teacher, supervising teacher, instructor and associate professor in the University of the Philippines. For sonic time, lie was dean of the College of Business Administration of the University of Manila. Tomas Confesor's more serious public life began when he was elected to the House of Representatives in tile Philippine Legisla­ture as representative of the third district of Iloilo for three consecutive terms from 1922 to 1993. As a member of the law-making body, he earned the epithet "Stormy Petrel", making his peers in the legislature vigilant to what should be best for the people. He rode on many a storm of debates and piled victory in his crusade against corruption and social injustices. However, the best accomplishment of Confesor was the cooperative movement. He gave it a big boost when he sponsored and secured approval of Republic Act 3425, bet­ter know as the Cooperative Marketing Law. In 1946, he was elected to the Senate for a term of 6 years, which position lie held until his death on June 6, 1951. He was married to Rosanna Grecia of Jaro, Iloilo City Iloilo Vice Governor Robert B. Maroma appropriated P100,000.00 from his discre­tionary funds for the construction of a one-room school building in CNCHS. The check for the purpose was released by the Office of the Provincial Treasurer to Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School on March 10. It was received by Mr. Precioso Gomez, cashier/disbursing officer of the school, who issued an official receipt of the check. With the release of the amount, the con­struction of the one-room school building will soon start. It will be done by adminis­trition inasmuch as the school has pre-bid­ding and awards committee. The new building will rise near the Fili­pino building. It will be annexed to another one-room building which was constructed through the share of the school from the cash prize of the Municipality of Cabatuan in Cong. Tirador's Cup held last year. Vice Governor Maroma is an alumnus ol' the school. He graduated from then Cabatuan High School in 1963 as third honorable men­tion. "In beh.!If of the school, I thank Vice Governor Maroma for helping our school solve its classroom shortage problem," school administrator Miss Lilia G. Fancubela said. – -------------- SG puts up study shed To provide students with additional facil­ity for studying during their free time, the Student Government of the school has put Lip a study stied behind the renovated PTA-Science building. The new school facility cost the Student Government some P22,000.00 in labor, ce• meat, and sonic construction materials. The galvanized iron sheets for roofing and coos! of the wooden construction materials were salvaged from the demolished quadrangle building of the school. The construction work was contracted and supervised by Mr. Rufo Casianan, head of the Industrial Arts de­partment of the school.
