MARCH 1998 Re G&W 11 Computer education should be emphasized in Ph tipping education - Bagatsing Grade school pupil chosen "Dampug '98" JOHN CARLO PUGA CABALLO John Carlo Puga Caballo was chosen as 'Dampug' for this year's Easter Sunday reenactment of Resurrection. `Darnpug' is an angel personified by a small girl or boy who will announce the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Eight year old John Carlo is a grade 2 pupil of Colegio de San Jose. John John and his elder brother Christian Earl are the only children of Raul Talip Caballo of Bohol and the former Richa Puga of this town. Both his mother and father are nurses employed in the Middle East. John John's mother was also a `Dampug' in 1967. John Carlo, nephew of Fr. Ely Tavarro is being trained by Victor S. Maroma, Master Teacher 11 of CNCHS. The 'Darnpugan' or the place where the ceremony will take place for this year's Resurrection reenactment on April 12 is designed and constructed by Ruel 'boy'- de la Pena under the supervision of Fr. Amadeo Escan-an, parish priest. "'Destiny is not a matter of chance but a matter of choice." "Computer education should be emphasized in Philippine education because we are moving towards a highly technological future where computers play a vital role.." This was stressed by Ramon "Dondon" Bagatsing, congressman fourth district of Manila and Chairman of the Committee on Science and Technology, House of Representatives during the Joint FFP­FAHP-FFPCC Literary-Musical Contest where he was the guest of honor. "Filipino computer programmers are in demand not only in Asia but all over the world because Philippines is known to have highly skilled and competent computer programmers," he said. Bagatsing who passed several bills in line with Science and Technology said that the House of Representatives has allocated more than P120 million for computer literacy trainings and seminars to improve and accelerate the computer program in the present day Philippines. Bagatsing who speaks Ilonggo as fluently as he speaks Tagalog and The CNCHS Math Club, in cooperation with the Mathematics Department, sponsored the celebration of the Mathematics Week on February 16-19. The week long celebration focused on Mathematical games to test the skills of the students in the field of mathematics. The contests were open to all students in the four curriculum years. On the morning of February 23, the culminating program of the Math English claims that he has Visayan roots - his father being a Negrense and his mother from Leyte is waray­waray. He commented that it was only a stroke of fate that he was "assembled", brought up and educated in Metro Manila. "Educate yourselves in computer technology. It is your passport to better job opportunities here in the Philippines and abroad," he concluded. Week Celebration was held. Several contests were staged right after the raising of the Philippine Flag. The students competed in Math vocabulary, composo, and encomium speaking contests. As a sort of fund-raising activity, the Math Club held a raffle draw with 15 consolation prizes and 3 major prizes.
