®r L, ~(ew F F A TU WE CPS Ch English Club sponsors February Affair By: Ray Ann ROSaldeS 4-A The English Club of the school sponsored the February Affair 2004 to celebrate Valentine's Day. To highlight the week-long celebration, a culminating program was held last February 16, 2004 at 7:00 a.m. This year's celebration has the theme "Quality Education Through English Proficiency.' The academic and dramatic contests such as scrabble, boggle, vocabulary, crossword puzzle, poem writing, essay writing, spelling acting out, and character impersonation were given. The students showed their talents and skills during the series of competition. The first placers In the different contest are the following: Aldwin Leslie Muyuela of 11- Descartes in Boggle; Marie Andrea Urbano of I- Newton in crossword puzzle; Frejelene Canto of IV-A in squabble; Sarah Jane Portillo In scrabble; and Dixie Mae Tormon of II-Descartes in spelling. In vocabulary contest, June Angelica Morales and Sheena Marie Brey bested all the other curriculum years; in acting out contest, Lady Dawn Casanares and Jemil Ignacio Azin were declared champions; Ross Petand Mayormente of IV-A won in poem writing; David Jeremiah Pedrosa of IV-A grabbed the first place in essay writing; Agape Arrida of II-Descartes won in character impersonation. Another activity in the February affair is the raffle draw. There were three major prizes, ten' consolation prizes (worth P100), and ten door prizes given to the winners. Also during the program, the English Club officers, headed by their president Sheena Marie Brey were Inducted. Other officers of the Club are Ma. Maroma (also the acting administrator of the school), and Miss Ramona Marcon (emergency teacher). a 0 GiVA visits Cabatuan By: Jeffry Martinez 4-A President Glor,a Macapagal- Arroyo visited Cabatuan last January 25, 2004 to launch her new project, the New Iloilo Airport Development Project (NIADP) an airport of international standards. The project is sponsored by the government of Japan with the estimated budget of P6.1 billion. The site of the Construction is situated in Sta. Barbara and Brgy. Tiring, Cabatuan. It is believed that the propose project will be the biggest airport in the country. The president also prided about three projects that she had implemented in Iloilo. The first among the three was the launching of NIADP, the second was the road maintenance project with the slogan "Kalsacla natin, Alagaan natin," and the last was the opening of the Miran power plant in Lapaz, Iloilo City. The three projects launched in Iloilo will provide jobs for the lionggos. For the first time in the history of the school, the Cabatuan Parochial School (CPS), a private school owned and managed by the parish in town, chose its Miss United Nations through a beauty pageant held on October 24 at the covered gym in the town plaza. Maria Alyssa Yniego Sadava, a Grade III pupil of the school, got the nod of the judges to win the title of Miss United Nations 2003 of the school. During the beauty pageant, she represented the country of El Salvador. She was crowned by Sangguniang Bayan member Amelita D. Maroma, a member of the Board of Trustees of CPS. She was assisted by Rev. Fr. Virgilio M. Permosil, principal of Cabatuan Parochial School and parochial vicar. Aside from winning the title, Alyssa won three special awards: Best in Production Number, Best in Casual Wear, and Best in National Costume. The 9-year old beauty queen is the elder of the two children of Martin Sadava III and the former Melanie Yniego. Adjudged as first runner-up was Hannah Iris B. Acero, a Grade III pupil who represented Venezuela. She Ediiberto de Jesus, Secretary of the Department of Education, issued DepEd Order No. 4, series 2004 which provides additional guidelines on the new performance-based New Grading System. The Order states "DepEd Order No. 79, series 2003 moves the students evaluation process away from the misleading effect of the transmutation tables and awards a performance-based grading system that provides more reliable measure of what students are actually learning in their classes." According to the Order, the changes introduced to implement the new, performance-based grading system are as follows: a. Ending the use of transmutation tables to to CNCHS. Socialization by class will then be held in school. After lunch, all Class coordinators will meet together to elect the new officers of the CNCHS Alumni Association The homecoming ball will be held in the covered gyn-i in the town plaza at 7:00 p.m. During the ball, the new officers of the Association will be inducted into office. The Alumni Muse win be crowned in the later part of the evening. As agreed, the General Alumni Homecoming of won the Best in Sports Wear award. Second runner-up was Liza A. Enerio, a Grade II pupils who was Miss Brazil. She also wona special award as Most Photogenic. Mariugel Louise M. Leguira, a Grade III pupil, came out third runner-up. She was Miss China during the pageant. Completing the Royal Court was Jebee M. Borbon, the fourth runner-up. Representing Puerto Rico, the Grade IV pupil romped away with Best in Talent award. Fifteen candidates vied arrive at the grades of students. b. The re-design of test-based assessment instruments (periodic examinations, long tests, quizzes to give appropriate weights to the basic competencies covered in the classes; and c. Basing the final, year-end mark on the average of the grades obtained by the students in the four grading periods. The Department of Education, after obtaining feedback on the third grading period results from the fields, has deemed it necessary to introduce additional guidelines to ease the transition into the new performance-oased grading Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School takes place every three years. The activity doesn't have a fixed date because it is made to coincide with Easter Sunday of the Holy week. The incumbent officers of the CNCHS Alumni Association are Mr. Victor S. Aside from the five winners, the other contestants were Christine Nicole 0. Octaviano, Miss Indonesia; Jamie Ann A. Reguera, Miss England; Mary Charisse D. Rivera, Miss Costa Rica; Cynara Jane R. Patoc, Miss Greece. Alyssa Nicole L. Kapawan, Miss Egypt; Sofia Louraine T Yebra, Miss France; Maria Ysabelle C. Justiniani, Miss Bahamas; Lency Mae 0. Cleofas, Miss Philippines; Alyssa Jude M. Montalban, Miss Australia; and Ma. Christine G. Caspe, Miss Austria. system. These will enable teachers and students to adjust to the new system. Rather than immediately imposing higher norms, the guidelines will allow the gradual raising of academic standards to the desired levels. As stated in the Order, the transitional guidelines are as follows: a. Per the fourth grading period, the tests will be designed so that 70% of the items will be easy, 20% moderately difficult, and 10% items difficult. b. The passing mark this year will be 70 instead of 75. c. The lowest rating to be indicated in the card remains 65.
