Leading by a margin of only three points over the closest rivals the Juniors, the Seniors clinched the over-all championship of the Intramural Meet of the school held on October 17-18. The champion amassed a total of 251 points. The Juniors team trailed with 248 points to emerge first runner-up. The Seniors displayed their superiority in baseball, basketball (boys and girls), softball (girls), athletics (boys), gymnastics (boys), boxing, and chess (girls). On the other hand, the Juniors lorded it over in volleyball (boys), soccer football, sepak takraw, table tennis (boys and girls), lawn tennis (boys), badminton (boys), chess (boys), gymnastics (girls), and athletics (girls). The Sophomores dominated the volleyball (girls), and the badminton (girls). The neophyte Freshmen survived the onslaughts of their opponents by winning the gold medal in lawn tennis (girls). Declared as the highest individual pointer of the Meet, in the boys division, was Bobby Rapists of the Seniors who earned a total of 52.5 points. His female counterpart was Pamela Boteja of the Freshmen, with 41 points. The two-day athletic competitions started with a parade around the major streets in the poblacion of the town. A program was held after the parade at the school stage. Mrs. Evelina R. Artieda, head of the Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health (MAPEH) department of the school that Sponsored the athletic meet welcomed all the guests and the participants to the occasion. Invited to be the principal speaker was town Mayor Ramon C. Yee. In his speech, Mayor Yee emphasized the need to acquire desirable values from athletic meets. He encouraged athletes and non-athletes to internalize and practice the values Of sportsmanship, teamwork, honesty, cooperation, and perseverance. He expressed the support of the Municipal Government to the sports program of the school. Denver Cuello, a senior student and boxer of the school who was a gold medalist in the West Visayas Meet last year, led all the athletes in the recitation of the Oath of Amateurism. Mr. Victor S. Nine to%,ns comprising the Third Congressional District of Iloilo participated in a four-day athletic competitions. They were Bingawan, Calinog, Lambunao, Janivay, Badiangan, Mina, Pototan, Cabatuan, and Maasin. The athletic competitions I were divided into two divisions-elementary and secondary. Some games have two Categories- boys and girls. For the secondary level, 27 sports events were competed. They were archery, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, football, gymnastics, lawn tennis, taekwondo, and volleyball. Most games were played in Maasin Central Elementary School ground Due to lack of facilities. football and lawn tennis were played in Cabatuan The winners in the Congressional Meet automatically qualified to participate in the Iloilo Integrated Meet held in. December. Every year, the Department of Education mandates the holding of athletic meets starting in the school level. known as Palarong Pampaaralan, the activity serves as laboratory of acquired knowledge and skills of students in physical education classes. After the school level of competitions. the Meet proceeds to the district or municipal level which is followed by the congressional level. The integrated level follows and is followed by the regional level and finally the Palarong Pamoansa. Denver Cuello, a senior student of the school, started giving a name to CNCHS through his boxing prowess since his freshmen days. He emerged the champion in the 36-kilogram category during the Congressional Meet. The next year, he joined the 39- kilogram category. He became the champion during the Congressional Meet and in the Iloilo Integrated Meet. During his junior year in this school, he competed in the 42-kilogram category. This time, his boxing star shone up to the Regional level. He was the champion during the Congressional, Integrated, and West Visayas Regional Meet. He qualified to participate In the Palarong Pambansa 2003, however the National Meet did not materialize. This school year, Denver made an impressive performance during the Congressional Meet only because the boxing bouts were canceled during the Integrated Meet due to an unfortunate incident. As a promising boxer, Denver has been undefeated in all 12 invitational boxing tournaments held in San Joaquin, Miag-ao, Pototan, Janivay, Calinog, New Lucena and Iloilo City. ff!
