JUNE - DECEMBER 2006 A good for a P By: Rovie de i Research Paper EFFECT OF PEANUT (Arachis hypogaea) LEAF EXTRACT AND FERMENTED PEANUT LEAVES ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF BITTER GOURD (Momordica charantia) Researcher: Rae Anne S. Adelantar Address Pamuringao Garrido, Cabatuan, Iloilo School Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School Summary: This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of Peanut Leaf Extract and fermented Peanut leaves on the growth and yield of Bitter Gourd. Distinctly, this study was carried out to determine the effect of Peanut leaf extract and fermented Peanut leaves 0 on the growth of Bitter Gourd in terms of height after four weeks of application and the significant effect of Peanut leaf extract and fermented Peanut leaves on the yield of Bitter Gourd in terms of the weight of the fruit yield after eight weeks of application. This study used Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD) as the experimental design. There were four treatments namely: Treatment A (Commercial Fertilizer), Treatment B (Fermented Peanut Leaf), Treatment C (Peanut Leaf Extract), and Treatment D (Negative Control). The treatments were replicated thrice. The Peanut leaf extract was extracted using mortal and pestle. All fertilizers were applied by Band Application or by applying the fertilizer inches away from the plant. The data concerning the growth were gathered by measuring the stem using a meter stick after four weeks of application while data regarding the yield were gathered on the eight week after application of said extract. The weight of the fruits was measured using a weighing scale. Analysis of the data revealed that the use of Peanut leaf extract and fermented Peanut leaves has a high significant effect on the growth of Bitter Gourd in terms of the height of the stem in feet. The data also showed that Treatment B or the Fermented Peanut leaves extract has a high significant effect on the growth of Bitter Gourd compared to other treatments but as effective as the Treatment A or the Positive Control (Mixed Urea and Triple-14). It also showed that the use of Peanut Leaf Extract has a significant effect on the yield of Bitter Gourd in terms of the fruits bore by the plant. The data also revealed that Treatment B or Fermented Peanut Leaves extract has a high significant effect on the yield of Bitter Gourd compared to other treatments. Conclusion: The researcher concludes that the Peanut Leaf Extract has a high significant effect on the growth and yield of Bitter Gourd in terms of the height of the stem in meter and weight of the fruits bore by the plant. The fermented Peanut Leaves extracts have a high significant effect on the Bitter Gourd compared to other treatments. With regard to the yield of the plant, the fermented Peanut leaves extract has a high significant effect on the Bitter Gourd. Recommendation: The researcher recommends the use of Treatment B (Fermented P e a n u t Leaves) as a more suitable a n d convenient to use because it is easier to make and is more effective compared to o t h e r treatments. Studies have suggested that too little sleep may increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and depression. Getting a good night's sleep is one of the simplest things a person can do to stay healthy. How much sleep do you need? A good night's sleep means waking up rested and energized. On average, a healthy adult needs between six and eight hours of sleep a night, according to Dr. Ravi Seshadi, a sleep expert and clinical director of MD Specialist Healthcare at the Paragon Medical Centre in Singapore. However, the amount of sleep it takes to achieve rejuvenation varies from person to person. People who lose sleep every night will suffer from what is called sleep debt. The sleep debt is compounded over a prolonged period and recovery will take much longer than the actual hours lost. The time it takes for a sleep deficit to accurate depends on how consistent the problem is. Losing a couple hours of sleep for several nights is enough. Why are we so sleep deprived? People were so busy that they just don't have sufficient time to get the sleep they need. They suffer from sleep disturbances because they indulge in activities that extend way beyond their bedtime. It's not just work that makes them cut down on sleep but also their lifestyle. Simply socializing or surfing the Internet can engage people far beyond their bedtimes. How important is a good night's sleep? Sleep is imperative to maintaining one's health. Not getting enough sleep can compromise your immune system. The immune system works best when you're asleep said Stanley Coren, author of Sleep Thieves. When one is sleeping, the natural cell killers are generated. Natural killer cells are produced in the bone marrow and found in the blood and lymph fluid. Natural killer cells are part of the body defense system against external infections. Sleep is important in keeping not only your waistline trim, but your brain activity balancedas well according to Dr. Moral of the Philippines. During sleep, brain neurotransmitters – the chemicals that deliver messages between nerve cells in the brain – are replenished. Any form of stress, including lack of sleep results in the depletion of the brain chemicals thus causing emotional disturbances including depression, anxiety, and general feelings of anger of -A-C make and is more effective compared to o t h e r treatments. Red Tomatoes, cranberries and pomegranates are beneficial sources of anthocyanins and lycopene, which are possible deterrents to heart disease and cancers of the prostate, cervix and gastrointestinal tract.
