Kalibo, Aklan (12 November) -- Businesses in Aklan have big potentials, according to Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) - Aklan Provincial Director Diosdado P. Cadena.

Director Cadena said Aklan's products, notably those produced by Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) here, like pina, abaca, gifts and house wares and other novelty items are already exported.

These products already enjoy good market competition, and operations of MSMEs producing these products generated jobs for Aklanons.

"Aklan's products are competitive. Processed meat products from Aklan are already sold in some provinces in the region through outlets. One bakery chain here has franchises and branches in some provinces already. These are indications that businesses and MSMEs are having bright prospects here," Cadena said.

This week, Aklan will be holding a week-long product showcase at SM City, Iloilo City. This activity, according to Cadena is an opportunity for Aklan's MSMEs to sell their products composed of hand-woven fabrics, fashion accessories, home decors, gift items, furniture and furnishings, meat products, delicacies and ornamental plants.

Cadena said DTI, along with the Provincial Government of Aklan and Hugod-Aklanon Producers Association, movers of the Product Showcase, hopes to reach the P2 million target sales this year to surpass last year's actual sales of P1.7670 million. The Product Showcase, now on its 6th year, will run from November 10 to 16, 2008.

Meanwhile, Cadena noted the ongoing construction boom in the province of Aklan.

"After Typhoon Frank which destroyed houses in the province, Aklanons are having their houses reconstructed or rebuilt and are now having precautions by building high-rise houses. This is good for the construction industry, and also good for Aklanons, as this will generate employment, " Cadena said.

Cadena reminded Aklanons, however, to be vigilant in buying construction materials for their houses. According to him, people should buy materials like cement, wiring, electrical devices etc. with product standard marks. (PIA)
